Department of Multilingual Learner Education
Our Philosophy: Culturally & Linguistically Responsive Teaching
The mission of the Leominster Public Schools Multilingual Learner Education (MLE) Program is to empower students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds to achieve their highest potential as confident communicators, critical thinkers, and active contributors to our global society. We are dedicated to providing exemplary, research-based instructional strategies and holistic support that embrace each student's unique experiences and accelerate their English language proficiency while preserving and celebrating their rich cultural heritage.
Our goal is not just English proficiency, but cultural dexterity—giving students the tools to navigate different environments while honoring their home language and traditions.
How We Support Our Students
We provide a comprehensive range of services tailored to each student’s English proficiency level. Our program focus includes:
English Language Development (ELD): Targeted instruction to build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Sheltered Instruction: Specialized classroom techniques that make grade-level content (Math, Science, Social Studies) accessible to students learning English.
Cultural Validation: Classroom environments that reflect the diverse backgrounds of our student body.
Eligibility & Placement
When a student enrolls in our district, we follow a standardized process to determine eligibility for EL services:
- Home Language Survey: Completed by all families during registration.
- English Proficiency Assessment: If a language other than English is spoken at home, students are assessed using the state-approved proficiency screener.
- Service Determination: Based on results, a tailored plan is developed to support the student’s specific linguistic needs.
Family Engagement & Rights
Families are our most important partners. As a parent/guardian of an English Learner, you have the right to:
- Receive school communications in a language you understand.
- Participate in the English Learner Parent Advisory Council (ELPAC).
- Request interpreter services for school meetings and conferences.
Bilingual Family Liaisons
Each school has a bilingual family liaison available to speak with you or to help you find someone to speak with you in your language.
